To all those who have had a hard time learning, I feel your pain. The reality is that some learning difficulties are a result of our minds. My school days were mainly during the 60's and the 70's. The realization that some people minds would flip numbers and letters around was not widely recognized as a learning problem. What did happen is that you were given the label slow, stupid, dumb or worst. I am speaking from personal experience; not from a book.

Once you realize that you have a learning problem, you have to keep trying and be positive. I remember looking at some of my math papers in high school. I would say to myself, how did I miss that? I know that answer, what happen? I understood that problem. I would again ask myself; how did I miss that one? I never realized that my mind was seeing numbers and letters incorrectly. I realize now that for me the key is to slow down and concentrate hard on any given task, especially with numbers.

I began to realize that if I slowed down, I was less likely to make a mistake. It is as if my mind had time to really look at the proper order numbers and letters. The added process of giving more time was a big benefit. During this time, I can most hear the mind saying "pay attention or look again or make sure of the order". Over the years i have learned to do this regularly.

We have to be kind to ourselves when learning. Others may not understand why you are so thorough, but that is not your problem. We must take care of ourselves first by giving our minds the time it needs to be correct. Because of my sometime slowness, I have received many hard stares and unkind comments over the years. It is all apart of life; I don't let it bother me to much. A key is to be willing to practice everyday at doing better. I have learned to be content, and to keep trying everyday.

Finally, we must develop a positive attitude towards learning. We must be willing to practice at our own pace. We must not be ashamed of who we are. Everyday we should be willing to focus on what we have to do; I mean really pay attention. I have learned to give my mind time to process information. I sometime will just look at a problem and let everything sink in. To make my point, please read this article again very slowly.
