Choosing the best luggage can be a daunting task. There are so many factors to consider. And with so many brands available like Tumi, Samsonite, Delsey, Briggs & Riley & others, there's no shortage of luggage available. Luggage sets can range in price from $100 to over $1000. Each brand & luggage set has its own advantages & disadvantages.
Common luggage sets contain anywhere from 3 to 5 pieces. Most carry the following: A wheeled carryon bag, a small duffel bag, a garment bag, & usually a larger piece that can pack many items for long term trips.
When buying luggage, one must consider the nature of the trip. If you often travel for business, a quality carry on bag & garment bag are needed. Most luggage brands offer garment bags with advanced packing features to ensure that business suits do not wrinkle during travel. Many others feature spacious pockets for files, document & even laptops.
Another consideration is your "carry-on" preference. Most airlines also have a carry-on weight limit of 40 pounds. Many brands feature special boarding totes, perfect for short trips & easy to check at the airport.
Weight of the luggage is another consideration. No one wants a heavy bag to carry when maneuvering in tight quarters on a plane or at a terminal. Many luggage brands have begun addressing this, constructing their travel bags from lightweight material. Mobility of the luggage is another issue. Most luggage pieces have skate wheels which allow the user to pull or push the luggage along. These same pieces have locking adjustable handles with comfort grips, making for easy mobility.
Finally, durability is an important factor. If you travel extensively, pay close attention to the construction of the bag itself. Look for padding along the corners to protect against punctures. Also inquire about any zippers on the bag, as these are the most likely to break over time.
