For most college students the last thing on their mind is health insurance and this is shown in some recently published statistics which show that approximately one out of three college students do not have any form of health insurance coverage. Attending university is an expensive business and simply finding the money you need and sorting out your college loans is difficult enough, but you must also think about including some form of health insurance along with everything else that you will need to have.

You should naturally begin by looking at your parents' health insurance plan if this applies because it is possible that it will include cover for you during your time at university. However, you do want to read through the small print carefully because some plans will provide cover for while you are attending university while other plans will not. Two things to look for in particular are location and age.

A lot of plans will cover children up to the age of 18 or 21 while you are at home and some plans will also extend this age limit providing you remain in full-time education. Many plans are however limited to cover within a certain geographic area and so, even if you meet the age requirements of the plan, you may discover that you will not be covered if you are away from home.

Should you parent's plan will not provide you with the cover you need then you will have to organize your own student health insurance and will have to look for suitable providers. Luckily, this is not too difficult and there are a number of insurance companies which provide plans that are specially designed for college students. So, where do you begin looking?

To start you should look at your own university because universities will frequently make arrangements for their own students to get cover at preferential rates. This does not necessarily mean that this is the best plan for your particular needs and you should look at the details to ensure that it meets your needs. Even so your own university is an excellent place to begin your search and will normally provide you with the best deal. Another thing to think about when looking at your own university is just what type of medical facilities are provided on campus. Most of the bigger universities will have excellent medical facilities which are staffed 24 hours a day, while many of the smaller universities will have much more limited facilities.

Outside of the university itself you can also look to the insurance companies as well as several publicly funded organizations for cover. As well, do not overlook the fact that there are several different forms of plan which are aimed at different groups of students. Short-term health cover for example may be attractive to a lot of graduate students and can often be extended after graduation to cover you until you secure employment and become eligible for an employer's plan. In addition, there are supplemental plans which will provide cover for you for things such as pre-existing medical conditions which are generally excluded from normal student cover.

Nowadays health insurance is a complicated subject and you will have to shop around in order to to find a plan which meets your needs and also your budget. This is nevertheless something which you should certainly not overlook because attending university is an expensive enough business in the first place and you do not want to risk your future or your money simply because you cannot cover the cost of illness or injury.
