A Fantastic Backpacking Destination
Montreal is the adopted capital of the Canadian French province of Quebec. But despite its North American location, it offers travelers an excellent opportunity to experience a quintessentially yet altogether unique strand of French and Franco-Canadian culture.
What's more, Montreal accommodation is routinely very reasonable. Montreal hostels are right up there with the very best hostels in North America for their range of facilities, their excellent central locations, and, especially, their prices.
Old City
The historic Old City and its French influenced is the perfect place for backpackers to begin their French discovery. Old cobbled streets meander through sensitively designed and European-influenced architecture dating all the way back to the 1600s.
Aside from the architecture, stepping into Montreal's Old City can often feel to the traveler like they've been transported to an entirely different country as changing cultural markers begin to wreak havoc on the senses.
The Place Jacques-Cartier is one of the closest things to the bohemian Montmartre outside of Paris. Artists and musicians joyfully vie for the attention along the pedestrian stretch of road, which is also flanked by a selection of museums and restaurants.
Elsewhere the Basilique Notre Dame is a spectacular gothic masterpiece that does well in its attempt to match the stunning architectural achievements of its European counterpart. Its interior ceiling's colorful artwork is also a joy to behold, as is the massive 700-pipe Casavant Feres Organ.
Parc Jean-Drapeau
Host of the Montreal Grand Prix, the beautiful Parc Jean-Drapeau is made up of two islands, St Helene and Notre-Dame. Montreal hostels near the park can be more placid than their centrally located counterparts, but there's still plenty to see.
The Habitat 67 is an odd-looking modern housing complex located on the Marc-Drouin Quay and is well worth a peak. Meanwhile, its Expo 67 partner La Ronde theme park is the modern replacement for the 1967 Montreal World Fair.
The park also hosts the impressive Montreal Fireworks Festival where several pyrotechnic companies compete for a trophy with impressive displays over the Dolphin's Lake. It attracts competitors and audiences from across the globe.
