There is nothing quite like treating yourself and that special someone to a weekend away, to get away from it all and take a well earned break. But in order to make sure you get the most from your short break it is always best to plan it in advance.
Firstly it's a good idea to get hold of some guidebooks that will take you off the beaten track. Think about the kind of things your partner likes to see and do as well, since this will give you some great ideas for finding places to visit that even they may not have heard of!
The best thing about steering clear of the obvious venues and landmarks is that you are guaranteed to get a stunning weekend away, even if you end up going somewhere you have been many times before. By doing that extra little bit of homework you will be able to find out about a whole new side of a city you think you are familiar with.
London is a great example of this. Start by looking for hotels in London that are close by to some of the places you want to visit. One of the most popular activities in London that both tourists and locals enjoy getting involved with is going on a walking tour. The Jack the Ripper tour always attracts a lot of attention, and there are also ghost walks and even a Harry Potter themed walk which you can now try. You will still see many of the sights of London but in an altogether different manner!
When it comes to springing the surprise, a bit of advance planning will be worth the effort. You could print off a map of your destination and tuck it into an envelope which can only be opened when you both get into London itself. A selection of leaflets and clues as to what you will be doing when you get there can also help to add to the mystery and reveal what is in store when you finally arrive.
Don't forget you don't need to reveal all the details of the weekend in one go; you could arrive at your hotel and arrange an early meal for the evening, before setting out on a guided walk in the local area. You can keep your plans for the following day under wraps until you get up and you're ready to head out.
Wherever you stay and whatever you decide to do, a weekend away doesn't have to be restricted to the usual sights and sounds that tourists go for. Even if you live locally there are bound to be places you haven't seen before, so don't settle for the obvious.
That little bit of extra effort can really pay off - as you will discover once you find yourself treading streets you never even knew were there!
