Deciding where to go for a summer holiday can cause arguments, even in the most placid of households. Whilst many people would like nothing better than to lie on a beach for 2 weeks, soaking up the rays whilst perusing a fortnight's supply of glossy magazines, there's no doubt that others would prefer to mix it up a bit, by adding some activities, sightseeing and nightlife into the equation.

Of course, compromise is undoubtedly the way forward for many households, which then means it's simply a case of finding that magical location that ticks all the boxes and has enough variety to please everyone.

For many years now, the 'classic' holiday destination for families, couples and friends the world-over has to be Florida. Aptly nicknamed 'the Sunshine State', Florida experiences year-round sunshine and is a perfect location for both winter and summer holidays. But what makes Florida truly exceptional is its status as a peninsula.

With the Gulf of Mexico to the west and Atlantic Ocean to the east, there is over 1000 miles of coastline to enjoy. Florida features mile-after-mile of beautiful beaches, from the world-famous Daytona Beach in the north, all the way down to Miami Beach in the south.

But of course, everyone knows about Florida's great beaches, so what else does the sunshine state offer?

Well, for culture vultures, there is the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, which houses the largest collection of the surrealist artist's work outside of Europe. Located on the campus of the University of South Florida, the collection includes a vast array of oil paintings, watercolours, graphics, photographs and sculptures.

And if it's the great outdoors that is being yearned for, then look no further than the Florida Keys, an archipelago of over 1700 islands beginning a little south of Miami and stretching to a mere 94 miles from the Latin American island of Cuba. The 'keys' are essentially the exposed section of an ancient coral reef, which means the marine-life in the region is outstanding, with turtles, dolphins and an abundance of exotic fish all patrolling the waters.

Florida holidays for most people are synonymous with perhaps the most famous resort in the world; the Walt Disney World Resort. Situated just outside of Orlando, it is a sprawling city within a city and contains theme parks and water parks, not to mention an abundance of shopping, dining and entertainment venues, setting the benchmark for recreational resorts the world-over.

So, it seems Florida offers enough diversity to settle most household holiday arguments. From sun and sand to culture and wildlife, the sunshine state certainly seems to have it all. So go on, mix it up a little!
