The Angel Underground is a London tube station located at Angel Islington on the Bank branch of the northern line of the London Underground between Old Street and King's Cross, St. Pancras stations. Being a historic train station in London that was constructed in the year 1901, by the City and South London Railway, The Angel Underground sees tens and thousands of commuters passing through it each day.
The London Underground has long been hailed as one of the most efficient public transport systems in the world and its 400 kilometers of track makes it the world's most extensive metropolitan rail network. It is also one of the most used systems in the world as well with over a billion passengers being recorded in 2007.
The Angel Underground was also one of the five stations on the network to be named after pubs that were located nearby. Thus, the origin of the station's name can be traced back to the popular Angel Inn that was established in 1638. Similar to most other stations that were built during the early 1900's the Angel had a central island that served as the platform and two rail lines. This old school arrangement can still be seen at the Clapham North and Clapham Common tube stations.
Following safety concerns regarding the central island, the Angel tube station underwent a major reconstruction program and was reopened in 1992. Further development programs are in the pipeline for Angel Underground as government plan was unveiled proposing a linkage between Angel and Chelsea-Hackney line, thus would serve as an interchange between the two major rail lines on the Underground.
Located in one of London's central boroughs, the Angel Underground is the gateway to the historic Angel Islington area. The area is well known for its artistic background and regular drama and music productions can be enjoyed in the local theatres. Apart from this the area is also known fro famous attraction such as the historic Union Chapel, N1 Shopping Centre and the Business Design Centre.
