Neighbors and friends do not always have the time and experience to be able to provide proper care for your animal. However, a boarding service will have the professionals who can.

By selecting a boarding facility, the pet avoids the stress of the long car or airplane ride. He also will receive more attention than if left home alone. The staff is trained to notice health problems that might occur and can get your pet help. Boarding facilities are also ideal for escape artists as their kennel is very secure.

Boarding facilities do have several drawbacks to be considered. There is stress caused by the unfamiliar environment. The pet has interaction with other pets and could contract a contagious health problem. For pets who are not accustomed to traveling, the drive to the facility may be quite strenuous. In addition, if the pet is not a cat or dog, there is difficulty associated with finding a facility which will accept the animal.

Kennels are best found by word of mouth recommendations. These can be obtained from friends, neighbors, veterinarians, and animal shelters. Make sure the kennel is up to date with its state licensing. Inquire as to whether the facility is a member of the American Boarding Kennel Association which inspects their members for quality care. Do not forget to call the Better Business Bureau to see if complaints have been filed. Lastly, consider the pet's needs in selecting the right kennel.

Visit the facility and see if it is clean and has good ventilation, light, and temperature. Talk with the staff and determine if they are caring and knowledgeable. Check if pets are required to be on vaccines. Are the runs large enough for your dog and what is the exercise schedule.

To prepare your pet, make sure he is trained in basic commands and wells socialized. If the pet is aggressive or unruly, they may not be a good candidate. To help your pet to adjust to a long stay, it is advisable to try a weekend at first to see if problems occur. Make sure to bring any special medications or food to the kennel with you. Let the staff know of any specific medical or behavior issues such as a fear of storms before you leave.
