Basic needs in caring for a pet include feeding the appropriate diet geared for the age of the dog. Dog food products can be found for puppies, adult and senior dogs. As your pet grows older you need to be aware of weight gain. Obesity is not healthy for dogs or cats. Discuss with your veterinarian what changes you should make in an overweight pet's diet. Keep treats to a minimum and never feed a dog or cat chocolate as it can be poisonous to pets. Be sure your pet has a supply of fresh clean drinking water at all times.

Grooming your pet regularly should be a daily routine. It decreases the shedding of hair and improves his skin and coat. Bathing as needed should also be part of the grooming routine. Use a good quality shampoo and if needed flea and tick products. Be sure to read and follow all directions for proper use of any product on your pet.

Do your part and spay or neuter your dog and cat to keep them from having unwanted litters. Animal Shelters all over the United States are full of homeless or unwanted dogs and cats and many have to be put down. Only a few get adopted into loving homes. Spaying or neutering helps cut down on your pet having health and behavior problems.

Activities such as walking are a great way to give your pet the exercising he needs daily. Most experts advise walking at least 40 minutes with your pet. When walking your dog always use a good collar and leash. Other activities can include taking your dog to a local dog park where he can run free and interact with other dogs and people. Enrolling in an Obedience Class is another way to socialize your dog and teach him to be a well behaved companion.

Have your Vet check out your dog and his overall health. Keep all vaccinations up to date. Be ready for any unforeseen emergency and keep your Vets telephone number handy. Keep records of any treatments or vaccinations in case you need to review them.

These are just a few of my tips on caring for your dog or cat.
