In a relationship there are three phrases (as well as three little words) that can strike fear into a man - 'It's only a week till my birthday', 'I'm really excited about Christmas this year' and 'Do you know what day it is today?'.
Buying presents - for any occasion womenfolk decide merits such indulgences - can be a nerve-wracking experience for even the most assured man and a poor choice of gift can put a relationship into unstable territory. Many will only have experience of buying gifts for female members of their family and the range of presents that are suitable for a girlfriend shifts dramatically.
Flashing the cash is often seen as the easy way out, and whilst something expensive and sparkly will more often than not be a success, buying earrings for a girl without piercings is guaranteed to get you in trouble. The old adage that it's the thought that counts is true up to a point - but generally only if a good idea has been packed up a reasonably sized receipt.
Once you've been through enough gift giving days to have exhausted all the clichés - the flowers, chocolate, jewellery and lingerie - and you're looking for something a bit different then paying for a day out is a viable alternative. Whether it's an experience to share or something for her to enjoy alone or with a friend is up to you.
Even better is buying her two tickets or day passes and giving her free reign with her choice of company. Buying tickets to see your favourite band in concert may drop a valuable hint but may also lead to you being dropped for being a bit too selfish.
Something such as a spa day may be more appropriate and although the experience is thought of more prominently for women, they're not exclusively a girl-only zone so you may find yourself being invited along.
Pamper days are offered at spas all over the country and offer a variety of different treatments. Full body massages, facials, manicures and pedicures are some of the most popular treatments and facilities such as saunas, mud baths and steam rooms are also commonly available. Many spas will also provide lunch and offer use of a swimming pool and gym.
Special packages have been designed that allow solo, couple or mother and daughter day outs. Of course, if you make it perfectly obvious that the gift is not for you in any way, she will have a gaggle of friends eager to accompany her. They'll have no choice but to talk about you in glowing terms and your girlfriend will come home relaxed and extremely grateful for your generosity.
