There are a lot of techniques and methods out there that are supposed to help you save hundreds at the pump and improve your mpg such as running your car on water, but how many of these techniques actually work? One method I found that really does make a difference in gas mileage efficiency is called hypermiling.
You might have heard of hypermiling on the news or on the internet somewhere, and how driving like a hypermiler can get you 100 miles/gallon. While you might not be able to do that, if you hypermile you should be able to easily get at least a 30 percent better mileage per gallon no matter where you drive.
What is hypermiling?
It isn't some crazy fuel conversion device, it's basically a term for making certain changes to how you drive which in turn will help you save gas, cutting down on trips to the pump and more importantly keeping more money in your pocket. There are four main steps to driving this way.
Step 1: Record Your Gas Mileage
You're going to need to know how much gas you use, so after filling your car up, reset your odometer and keep track of your mileage and your gas tank.
Step 2: Driving less aggressively
Leave at least a 2 second gap between the nearest car in front of you on the highway, and use cruise control as much as possible. This is to make sure you won't be stopping and starting too much, because every push on the brake and gas pedals will waste gas.
Instead of stopping and starting when you see a red light coming up, coast as much as possible to keep more fuel in your tank.
Step 3: Avoid 0 MPG
When you bring your car to a complete stop, you end up getting 0 Miles per gallon! So always look ahead for heavy traffic or distant red lights, so you can start immediately coasting in order to cut a little time off of how long you will have to stop your car. Every second makes a difference!
Step 4: Avoid Traffic Jams
By driving at a constant speed, not darting in and out of traffic lanes, and keeping gaps between huge amounts of traffic and your car, you can avoid most traffic congestion and save gallons.
Step 5: Don't gun it!
Whenever you hit the gas pedal after stopping, it's always fun to push it as hard as possible to get that race car feeling, but you're wasting huge amounts of gas when you do this, so accelerate slowly.
These are 5 simple, but easy things you can do every time you go driving, and after a while get very easy and become second-nature to you. So start driving like a hypermiler, and you'll be able to save big money on gas and get a better mpg in no time!
