The rules and regulations about getting access to the background records for yourself or someone else have changed in many ways in recent years. That means it can be harder to get what you want, and next to impossible to find some things you need. What is even more confusing is that each state has its own set of guidelines, limits to what can be requested, and even different ways in which these can be found and obtained.

You are going to have to look into the laws within the state of your residence. You should be able to find what you need by going to the web site your state has set up for all state business. You can find ways to communicate with your lawmakers, and more information on common questions and queries put forth by other citizens. Here is where you are going to find the most information.

Some states, for example, will not allow you to look online for any type of background information that you would get through them. That means you can go to their web site to learn more, but you are going to have to go through the postal service to request and receive what you need. That means getting the right paperwork together, sending in the fee (if required), and then waiting for your returns. In other cases, the state may allow you to do all that you need to do through the Internet.

There are tons of different records that you can get through your state, but not all states offer them. There are conviction and arrest records that tell a lot about someone's past. Some have a sex offender registry that you can access online. You may also want to see what FBI files someone has, though those are obtained through Federal sources. You are going to have to see what you can get through your state, or through the state of residence for the person in question.

You may not find a lot in the way of a free state background check, but it certainly does not hurt to see what you can find. If anything, you can get more information about doing background searches. You may even find some free tools that might offer you some limited information.
