The world of book publishing is a notoriously competitive one. Each year, millions of manuscripts are sent to editors who cannot possibly have the time to give each of them the careful consideration that they may well deserve. As a result, it's hard for anyone to make enough of an impact to break into the market. It can be harder still if the work one produces is aimed only at a specific niche market. Traditionally speaking, authors of Christian fiction have found themselves up against just such a wall. However, in recent years, many top Christian book publishers have appeared on the market, creating the perfect specialty publisher for those authors of specialty fiction to unleash their unique voice upon the publishing world.

Christian publishing, as niche as it is, is surprisingly a very diverse market. Christian book publishing services tend to fall into a large number of sub-specialty categories including Christian books for children, teenagers, young adults, and even genre fiction such as Christian romance and Christian westerns. As a matter of fact, a huge percentage of the world's youth book publishing is currently dominated by the Christian publishing market. The upshot of all of this is that even within the elatively small niche of Christian fiction, there are many opportunities for the author. To ensure success, however, it is vital that they identify exactly what market they're targeting. Those who dabble in Christian detective fiction, for instance, might have difficulty finding a place in a publisher who typically produces young adult novels for Christian youth. Therefore, it's important for these authors to do their research. Each publisher and its various imprints will invariably have websites where one can look at recent products released by these groups. Then, one can compare those products with their own output to determine whether or not one's work would fit in well with the material already being produced at any given publisher. In fact, it's a long standing truth that the ability to compare your work to a successful work already published by a publisher is a sure way to get attention in a query letter.

Secondly, one should bear in mind that Christian publishers vary not only in their market scope and demographic, but also in their ideology. Just as not all Christian literature is the same, not all Christian publishers are the same! A catholic book publishing company, for instance, is not likely to publish a novel with exclusively Protestant material and characters, nor is a Lutheran publishing house likely to find much successful merit in a book that takes place in the Vatican and primarily concerns Catholic doctrine and beliefs. It's nothing personal or discriminatory, of course, it's just a matter of demographics - the same as any other publishing niche.

The bottom line is quite simple: if one is attempting to publish a Christian novel at a mainstream publisher, they might well find that they're simply too small a fish in too large a pond. As a result, they might well find greater success at being a larger fish in a smaller pond: that of specialty Christian publishing.
