With the internet becoming increasingly more prominent in society, many habits - such as communicating and shopping - are changing to become more reliant on the web.

Online shopping in general has boomed in recent years. Consumers have realised that they can order products with much greater ease and the advent of shopping comparison sites means getting the best deal is simpler than ever - and all without leaving the house.

However, despite the confidence people have buying some items online, when making large investments - say in a house or a car - they often get wary of what could go wrong. The risk of paying a large sum of money to someone you may not have met before for a product you may not have seen strikes fear into many people and understandably so. This needn't be the case however - many reputable companies operate offline as well as online and offer security measures for paying on their website.

Whilst you may feel uncomfortable pay a large sum of money for a car you've never seen, let alone test driven, ruling out online shopping completely needn't be necessary.

Using the internet as your first port of call is often a good idea and a spot of 'virtual window shopping' can help give a better idea of what sort of car you want as you can assess different features of it before you get to the dealership. What sort of mileage does the car usually get? What safety features are present? If you do this type of homework before going to a seller it is a lot easier to change your mind or back out completely without the salesman pressuring you to buy.

You can also use it to discover the opinions of other people who have owned a similar car. This is a great way to discover the general feeling of these drivers towards a particular make and model you might be interested in, and you can find out about the small defects that a seller or manufacturer may not be keen to tell you. How does the gear stick fare after a few months of constant use? Does the handbrake cope well on a hill? Learning from other people's mistakes may save you a lot of money and stress.

When you get a new car, another important thing to sort out is car insurance. With so many companies offering different premiums and different incentives it's often difficult to remember the names of all the providers never mind all the deals. Getting a quote on your vehicle of choice can often help you to tailor your budget accordingly to reflect the likely premiums you'll have to pay.

This is when spending time online really can pay off, and with so many comparison sites it really is a quicker and more efficient way to shop.
