IS THE QUR'AAN THE WORD OF GOD?
By Ibrahim Poncardas Romas
Leaflet # 6
The Qur'aan is the Last Testament of God. It is a revelation of God in a form of recitation given to Muhammad (pbuh) through Angel Gabriel. It was revealed verse after verse and sometimes by chapter over two decades. The first revelation was the first five verses of Surah Alaq, in the year 610, Christian Era (C.E.) at the cave of Hira. And the last revelation was: "AND FEAR THE DAY WHEN YE SHALL BE BROUGHT BACK TO ALLAAH. THEN SHALL EVERY SOUL BE PAID WHAT IT EARNED, AND NONE SHALL BE DEALT WITH UNJUSTLY." (QUR'AAN, SURATUL BAQARAH 2:281).
The final revelation (of the Qur'aan) occured in Madinah Al-Munawwarah, 632 C.E. two weeks before the demise of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The message of the Qur'aan transformed the pagan and polytheist Arabs to God-fearing people. It is not possible to impose a Muslim's belief on a non-Muslim concerning the Qur'aan. But we must have criteria to ascertain such book, whether it is from God or not. The Word of God must: 1) Be perfect 2) Have no indecencies 3) Have no fallacies 4) Have no contradictions.
Perfect: The Qur'aan was revealed in Arabic to an Arab and written in Arabic. If ever translated to other languages, it is required that the original Arabic exists side by side with the translation. In case the translator deliberately or undeliberately mistranslates the Qur'aan, it will be easy to correct because of the existence of the original writing in Arabic. The Qur'aan is the basis of Islamic politics, economics, sciences and the daily life of an ideal Muslim. No revision has ever been made in the Arabic Qur'aan since it was revealed.
NO INDECENCIES: No single pornographic story or incest in the Qur'aan, unlike other so-called Sacred Books marred with indecencies. All stories in the Qur'aan are all for human benefits and strengthening moral values. A broken mirror cannot help or give true image to anyone who uses: such as a book if it contains immoralities and indecencies cannot guide humanity.
NO FALLACIES: All the verses in the Qur'aan are applicable to human beings. There is no saying in the Qur'aan such as; "But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;" (Bible) Matt. 5:39-44.
Those fallacies mentioned above are interpreted by a majority of the Christian Missionaries to mean that if somebody does evil, do to them in return what is good? I asked once, "Does it mean that if somebody raped your mother and sisters and you caught them in the act, would you offer them milk or coffee then let them go, love and forgive them?" They (almost all Christian Missionaries) would not answer and walked away. It is ridiculous and a fallacy indeed that person who is merciful to others yet has no mercy for his own family. What is the use of loving other people, yet being cruel to his own family? When he gives love and freedom to the culprits, is that justice?
NO TURNING OF THE OTHER CHEEK (NO FALLACY):
Fight in the way of God against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Go loveth not the aggressors. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for God. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers. (Qur'aan 2:190,193).
NO CONTRADICTIONS: The words of the Qur'aan are consistent and with wisdom. There is no verse in it that ridicules the qualities and the very being of the Creator. Unlike other so-called sacred books where there are stories that are contradicting to His Majesty and very degrading to His Power. Today only the Qur'aan meets the four criteria for elegibility to be the Word of God, as mentioned above.
QUR'AAN AND THE CHALLENGE: "Say: Verily, though mankind and the Jinn should assemble to produce the like of this Qur'aan, they could not produce the like thereof though they were helpers one of another." Qur'aan (Surah Al-Israa) 17:88.
"And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our servant (Muhammad), then produce a "Surah" (chapter)..." Qur'aan (Surah Al-Baqara) 2:23.
Fourteen centuries have passed since that challenge yet no single Arab has met it. The Qur'aan was revealed in Arabic form (one of the Semitic languages) in the midst of the Arabic speaking people. They were boasting of their fluency and had possessed the finest tongue (especially for poetry) in their generation: but all of them failed to meet the challenge.
SCIENCE IN THE QUR'AAN: The Big Bang Theory & The Source of Life: "Do not the Unbelievers see that the HEAVENS AND THE EARTH WERE JOINED TOGETHER (as one unit of Creation) before We cloved them ASUNDER? We made from WATER EVERY LIVING THING. Will they not then believe?"--Qur'aan (Al-Anbiyaa) 21:30.
THE EXISTENCE OF IRON: "We sent aforetime our apostles with Clear Signs and SENT DOWN WITH THEM THE BOOK and the Balance (of Right and Wrong) that men may stand forth in justice; and WE SENT DOWN IRON in which is great might, as well as many benefits for mankind..." Qur'aan (Al-Hadid) 57:25.
Professor Armstrong who works at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the U.S.A., stated "that if energy of the entire solar system was put together it would not be enough to form one atom of iron." "Scientists believe that iron is an Extraterrestrial that was sent to earth and not formed therein; in calculating the energy required to form one atom of iron, it was found to be about four times as much as the energy of the entire solar system combine together."**
Muslims accept scientific theories that do not contradict the Qur'aan. When science says that "matter cannot be destroyed," Muslims reject it, for Allaah is the only One who cannot be destroyed.
YARDSTICK
Very important to note, that we Muslims do not use science as a "YARDSTICK" of what the Qur'aan is all about. I am just giving few scientifical facts for those who consider science as the ultimate truth.
EMPHASIS ON THE WORD "PAIRS"
"And all things We have created by pairs, that haply ye may reflect." Qur'aan (Az-Zariyat) 51:49
Today it is scientifically proven that as Fertilization (of human being) comprises of OVUM AND SPERMATOZOA, even plants have male and female sexes. Salt is a combination of SODIUM AND CHLORINE. Air is composed of NITROGEN AND OXYGEN. Water is composed of HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN. Electricity consists of NEGATIVE CHARGE AND POSITIVE CHARGE.
**THIS IS THE TRUTH" pp. 85-86, by Abdullah M. Rehaili, World Supreme Council for Mosques Affairs Commission on Scientific Signs of Qur'aan & Sunnah, Muslim World League, Makkah Al-Mukarrammah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
