MARRIAGE (LIMITED POLYGYNY) IN ISLAM
By Ibrahim Poncardas Romas
Leaflet # 7
The most controversial institution in Islam from the non-Muslims' point of view is marriage. We always hear about polygamy. Polygamy has two categories: polygyny and polyandry. Polyandry means the practice of a woman having two or more husbands, polygyny is the practice of a man having two or more wives. Polyandry is absolutely abhorrent in Islam. To discuss polygyny, we must agree that only the Creator has the right to forbid or allow it. Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, Jesus Christ, and Muhammad, peace be upon them, never prohibited polygyny. Only during the time of Muhammad (pbuh), did God limit marriage for men to four. God says; "... marry women of your choice, two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them) then only one or (a captive) that your right hands possess. That will be more suitable to prevent you from doing injustice." Qur'aan (An-Nisaa) 4:3.
Look at the Holy Bible of the Jews and the Christians! Moses (Exodus 18:1-2 & Numbers 12:1) who brought the Law for Israelites had two wives. King David (1 Samuel 25:44 & 2Samuel 3:5) had a number of wives. King Solomon, the most powerful and wise King that ever-lived on earth; had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1Kings 11:3).
SURPLUS OF WOMEN
In the "great nations of the world," if all the men will marry, there will be a surplus of women as follows:
1) United States of America; 7, 800,000
2) Great Britain; 4, 000,000
3) Germany; 5,000,000
4) Soviet Russia; 7,000, 000
The problem is getting compounded in the United States of America because 98% of inmates in their prison cells are males. What is worse for unmarried American women, 25 million American men are gays (homosexuals). If you are one of those women mentioned above, what would you do? In Islam, whether she is no. 2, 3, or 4, her rights will be the same as those of the first wife, and likewise the rights of her children.
FACTORS THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE RAPID MORTALITY RATE OF MALES
1) War
2) Alcohol
3) Reckless driving
4) Violence
5) Susceptibility to diseases, medically
6) Shorter natural life-span than that of the female
Worldwide, the number of females is much higher than that of males. Needless to say that countless women today have exposed their physical beauty (literally) just to seduce men in order to be satisfied sexually. If no one will marry and satisfy them legally, sooner or later society will beget prostitutes, bastards, venereal diseases, and so forth.
LIMITED POLYGYNY (UP TO FOUR) CAN BE A SOLUTION OR A LIMIT TO THE FOLLOWING ILLNESSES OF SOCIETY:
1) Undesirable divorces among the married couples
2) Sexually transmitted diseases
3) Prostitution
4) Surplus of Women
5) Illegitimate children
6) Pre-marital sexual relationships
7) Incest
God the Most Merciful--The Creator knows best what He created. As the person who made the computer knows best what is good for the computer, the maker would not fail to write a manual (reference book) in order to maintain its good condition. He who created us gave books to the prophets to illustrate and demonstrate the correct way of life. There are so-called religious people today who even prohibit themselves from marriage and encourage celibacy: Qur'aan (Al-Khaf) 18:27; "... THERE IS NONE WHO CAN CHANGE HIS WORDS, and thou wilt find no refuge beside Him." God commanded us to multiply! Most common proofs used by people who oppose the plurality of wives are as follows; "THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY", "...THOU SHALT NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR'S WIFE. YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR'S WIFE... OR FEMALE SLAVE," EXODUS 20:14, 17. I want my good readers to open their eyes, that "covet" and "marry" are not synonymous. "Covet," according to "OXFORD DICTIONARY" means "desire greatly (esp. a thing belonging to another person)." In Islam adultery is a great sin; if a person who commits it an is proven guilty, with due process of law, he shall be put to death publicly. All the prophets of God knew what is the meaning of "covet" and "marry." Jesus Christ (pbuh) said "DO NOT THINK THAT I HAVE COME TO ABOLISH THE LAW OR THE PROPHETS."--Matthew 5:17.
The Prophets of God practiced polygyny: Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all). It is hypocrisy for a man to be contented with a wife, yet he raises his body temperature when he sees another beautiful lady or has sexual relationship with other women. If "St. Paul" contradicts the practices of the Prophets of God, then I am forced to say that he was a liar: He says; "For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my LIE unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?"-Romans 3:7 KJV.
Marriage age for women has a limit; beyond it, their hope and productivity deteriorate. Women's blooming age is from their first cycle to the age of 30. If they cannot find husbands, there is a great possibility that they will miss the match. In non-Muslim societies, the only chance for a woman to find a husband beyond her blooming period is to lower her moral values or bargain her ideals and standards. If no one marries her, she will suffer psychological, physical, and social deprivation. For a man, regardless of age, can propose marriage to whoever he likes, whereas, most ladies who are modest cannot, or it is shameful in their part, to propose marriage to men. The fact is there are women who ignore the rules of decency just to have partners in life. It is a fact that the number of women is increasing, while the number of men is fast decreasing, the common causes having been mentioned above.
As a woman, would you want to be alone in your problems, happiness, daily life, old age, and in death? Normally, parents will die, your brothers and sisters sooner or later will have their own families. Likewise, your relatives will be separated from you and will have priorities that will force them to neglect your very person. If you do not marry someday, it will be too late to face the pangs of consequences.
But Islam has given a solution: man can marry up to four provided he can practice justice. Which is better: to be a mother but not a wife, miss the match, be a public property, or to be number 2, 3, or 4, yet legal and chaste?
Muslims practice limited polygyny publicly and legally, while the enemies of Islam and the hypocrites practice it privately and illegally.
