For a lot of people travel insurance is merely one of various extras that the travel agent will try to get us to include in our holiday package to assist in boosting his profits and make our holiday even more expensive than it has to be. Nevertheless, there are three excellent reasons for ensuring that you do not leave home without your international travel medical insurance plan tucked safely into your pocket.
First, a travel insurance plan will protect you against losing your money should an emergency crop up and you are forced to cancel your holiday. This is particularly true if you are booking your holiday some time ahead because you cannot know what may happen in the weeks leading up to your departure. Having said this, by their very nature emergencies have a habit of appearing at any time and without warning which makes this one form of protection that should not be considered in terms of time.
It is natural to believe that nothing is ever going to happen to us however a holiday can frequently involve a considerable up-front payment and the loss of these funds could well mean that you cannot re-arrange your holiday later on.
Second, a travel insurance plan enables you to meet the cost of medical treatment both while you are traveling and while you are on holiday and, if you are unlucky enough to have a significant illness or accident, will also pay for you and your family to return home if this proves necessary.
Medical care could well be very good at your destination and it might even be very much less expensive than it is at home. However, a stay in hospital might still produce a very large bill that will eat deeply into your spending money. It is also possible that medical care at your destination leaves a lot to be desired and you might well need to curtail your holiday and head back home for the treatment you require.
Third, a travel insurance plan will provide protection for your possessions both while you are traveling and at your destination so that you will be compensated in the event of loss.
If you are a regular traveler then you will almost certainly have suffered the loss of your luggage at some stage and will know only too well just how inconvenient and costly this can be. I shall never forget stopping for lunch on my way to the airport on one particular holiday and carefully securing my bag in the trunk of my hire car. When I got back roughly thirty minutes later I found that someone had picked the lock on the passenger door and folded the back seat down to access the boot and make off with my case.
I also well remember sitting at a road junction one hot and sunny day in Portugal when a motorcycle pulled up beside the car and a boy reached through the open passenger side window to snatch my mother's purse which was by her feet on the floor.
Traveling overseas can be expensive enough but traveling without suitable insurance can result in bills that you simply cannot afford to pay. So, when you are planning a trip remember to add international travel medical insurance to your holiday list.
